Downtown Burbank Sidewalk Enhancement Project

The Downtown Burbank Sidewalk Enhancement Project is a first/last mile access, complete streets, and beautification initiative designed to strengthen the heart of Downtown. The project will improve walking and transit connections by linking the City’s six busiest transit stops, including the future Olive/San Fernando Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station, while enhancing the safety, function, and appearance of San Fernando Boulevard.

This project continues the Downtown San Fernando Boulevard Reconfiguration Project. Phase 1 introduced temporary safety and traffic-calming improvements along the corridor. This project now advances the Reconfiguration into Phase 2, which makes those improvements permanent through full reconstruction and upgraded materials. Phase 2 also expands the effort beyond the original corridor to include first/last mile enhancements within approximately a half-mile of the future Olive/San Fernando BRT station, strengthening transit access throughout Downtown.

Improvements include reconstructing three blocks of San Fernando Boulevard between Olive Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard with wider sidewalks, landscaped parkways and street trees, street furniture, space for outdoor dining, improved separation from vehicles, curb extensions, ADA-compliant ramps and accessible pedestrian signals, and high-visibility crosswalks. Together, these changes make it safer and more comfortable to walk, support local businesses by increasing foot traffic, and create a more attractive and welcoming public space.

Community input will guide the final design to ensure the street works well for residents, workers, businesses, and visitors. The project is funded through Measure M dollars awarded by Metro through its Active Transportation Cycle 2 grant program, along with Caltrans funding supporting Phase 2 implementation.

Join us for the upcoming Downtown Burbank Sidewalk Enhancement Project Visioning Community Workshops, where we will gather community input to help shape future improvements to Downtown Burbank’s sidewalks and streetscape. These meetings continue the early planning and community engagement for the Downtown Burbank Sidewalk Enhancement Project, which aims to make Downtown Burbank more walkable and accessible by advancing the reconfiguration of San Fernando Blvd. between Magnolia Blvd. and Olive Ave. to its second phase, and by adding other pedestrian- and transit-focused improvements within a half‑mile radius of the intersection of Olive Ave. and San Fernando Blvd.

During these sessions, attendees will participate in interactive placemaking exercises to share what they value most in the redesign and adaptive reuse of San Fernando Boulevard. Your feedback will directly inform the development of preliminary design concepts and help shape first‑ and last‑mile multi-modal safety enhancements within a half-mile radius of the future North Hollywood to Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit Stations at Olive Ave. and San Fernando Blvd. Participants are also encouraged to share any additional ideas or perspectives that may help guide the project toward a vibrant, active street frontage.
Two meeting options are available:

  • Meeting 1: Saturday, June 6, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Meeting 2: Tuesday, June 9, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
