Bear Sighting on 1200 block of E. Elmwood Dr.

NOTICE: There was a recent bear sighting on the 1200 block of E. Elmwood Dr. Please report wildlife sightings in our community to (818) 238-3340. Visit burbankca.gov/wildlife for more information.

The following precautions have been provided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife:

  • Never approach a bear or pick up a bear cub.
  • If you encounter a bear, do not run. Instead, face the animal, make noise, and try to appear as large as possible.
  • If attacked, fight back.
  • If a bear is encountered or attacks a person, call 911 immediately. 
  • NEVER attempt to haze a cub or a female bear with cubs. This may result in defensive behavior fromr the mother bear and/or injury to the cub.
  • While hiking, make noise to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear.

Bears may be attracked to residential areas where trash and food is easily accessible. The following tips should be followed to protect your home. 

  • Properly secure trash, including food scraps, in a bear-proof container or a well-secured trash bin.
  • Keep garbage bins in garages or secured areas and bring out the morning of collection day only.
  • Deodorize trash bins with bleach or ammonia.
  • Keep barbeque grills clean and stored in a garage or shed. 

It is important to remember that a variety of wildlife inhabit the Verdugo Mountains. Mindful consideration of the safety recommendations will ensure that thet beautiful Verdugo Mountains continue to be shared harmoniously by both people and wildlife in Burbank.
