Extreme Winds and Fire Conditions
The National Weather Service has issued warnings of widespread damaging winds and extreme fire weather conditions throughout most of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The City of Burbank is encouraging residents to prepare for the extreme winds and fire conditions anticipated in the area from Tuesday, January 7 through Wednesday, January 8, and potentially into Thursday, January 9. Widespread damaging winds and gusts ranging from 50-80 mph, with isolated gusts up to 80-100 mph are expected. The strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions may create hazardous situations, including an increased risk of wildfires, fallen trees, and power outages. The City urges the community to take steps now to ensure safety and minimize risks.
Safety Tips for High Winds:
Secure Outdoor Items Immediately: Bring inside or firmly secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and any loose objects to prevent them from being picked up by strong winds.
Check Windows and Doors Thoroughly: Ensure all windows, doors, and garage doors are tightly closed and securely fastened to minimize potential wind damage or debris entry.
Limit Outdoor Activity: Stay indoors during peak wind conditions, particularly away from trees, power lines, and unstable structures.
Report Power Outages: Report power outages and downed power lines by contacting Burbank Water & Power at 818-238-3700 (or 818-238-3778 after hours). Avoid downed power lines entirely—never touch or go near them.
Prepare for Power Interruptions: Anticipate power outages by having flashlights, spare batteries, and emergency supplies ready. Fully charge essential devices like phones and laptops, and consider a battery-powered radio for updates if power is lost.
Report Large Broken Branches and Tree Failures: Report fallen trees, broken branches, and other tree failures by contacting Landscape and Forestry Services at 818-238-5304 (or 818-238-3000 after hours).
Avoid Driving in High Winds: Refrain from driving during strong wind gusts whenever possible, as winds can create dangerous conditions, especially for larger vehicles, and may cause road obstructions like fallen trees or debris.
Stock Emergency Supplies: Have a 72-hour emergency kit ready with food, water, medications, and other necessities in case of extended disruptions or outages.
Report Suspicious Behavior Promptly: Stay alert for any unusual activity or potential fire hazards, and report them to local authorities immediately. The Burbank Fire Department urges heightened vigilance to prevent arson and other risks.
Stay Updated on Weather Alerts: Regularly check local news, weather updates, and the City of Burbank's official channels for storm-related advisories, warnings, or critical updates.
