Newly Appointed Executive Director John T. Hatanaka Leads the Way As Airport Looks to the Future

BURBANK, Calif., January 27, 2025 – With the start of his tenure as Executive Director, John T. Hatanaka remains laser-focused on the most critical project in the airport’s history: the replacement passenger terminal.

“It’s an exciting time for Hollywood Burbank Airport,” says Mr. Hatanaka. “The biggest challenge concerning our new terminal is getting the entire team - including airport staff, airlines, design team and construction crews - aligned in our vision to create the best possible passenger experience for future travelers.”

The facility is slated to open in October 2026 and will be in the northeast quadrant of Hollywood Burbank Airport, across the airfield from the current terminal. The 355,000 square foot, 14- gate facility will replace the existing terminal to meet FAA standards and State building requirements.

Mr. Hatanaka was appointed by the Burbank-GlendalePasadena Airport Authority (BGPAA) after the retirement this month of Frank Miller.

“John is poised to lead the Airport into this new era of growth and innovation,” says BGPAA President Ara Najarian. “We look forward to the leadership and vision he will bring to the role, ensuring continued excellence in service for travelers in the Los Angeles region.”

Mr. Hatanaka joined the Airport in 2002 and served most recently as Senior Deputy Executive Director for the last 15 years. He has been in the aviation industry for over 45 years, including 21 years with Japan Airlines and two years as an aviation consultant before arriving at BUR. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The BGPAA is a joint powers agency formed by the three cities to own and operate Hollywood Burbank Airport. The Authority is governed by a nine-member Commission, with each of the three cities appointing three commissioners. Each commissioner serves a four-year term.
