The Traffic Management Center (TMC) operates 200 traffic signals and monitors traffic flow with approximately 530 cameras. Traffic cameras are used for vehicle and bicycle detection with sophisticated technology to process algorithms that meet the demands of complex intersection configurations. A comprehensive fiber optic cable network provides access to all of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices and traffic signal controllers. Over 60 battery backup systems provide an uninterruptible power supply to traffic signals to keep the flow of traffic moving during power outages. Operators monitor the system and proactively adjust traffic signals using a central traffic management system that automates and responds to traffic demands. Real-time data collection and management tools are used 24 hours a day to improve traffic signal coordination and provide mobility solutions in the City of Burbank.
